Much like digital television, digital radio will adjust the way most of the people discover music and radio shows. In 2009 the British government begun to shut down the analogue Tv transmission. It is in fact estimated that by 2015 the governing administration will switch off the analogue radio signal too. This will incorporate the nation's FM, AM and MW broadcasts. If after the event you haven't changed your car radio to allow it to obtain the digital signal then you certainly won't have the capacity to tune in to the radio on the go!

There are a lot of advantages to possessing a DAB radio. The quality of sound is noticeably greater than the standard radio transmission today. The DAB car radio will pick up the digital reception and since digital doesn't get interfered with by external white noise the sound produced will be crystal clear.

The DAB car radio can even auto tune itself to get all of the digital radio broadcasts in the area. The radio will then present all of the channels in a list for you to view what you would like to listen to.

The benefit of a DAB car radio over a regular one is that you can send extra information down a digital frequency. This means that the song title or artist is displayed on your stereo interface. As growing numbers of programmes will most undoubtedly be broadcasted entirely in digital, like BBC 1Xtra and TalkSport, there's a more expansive choice for you to pick from.

So that it is possible to receive the digital broadcast you'll find many solutions offered to you.

It is possible to either obtain an add on for the present analogue(FM/AM/MW) system that is able to pick-up the digital broadcast on an external DAB box then send it to your analogue unit. It will warrant an extra aerial equipped to your car plus a compact unit, much like a sat nav sized kind of unit, secured on the dashboard.

Or you can get a whole new DAB car radio unit to replace your present radio. You will nevertheless have to install an external aerial to your car so as to receive the DAB broadcast. This could be the tidier process since you don't have an external system to fix on your dashboard or windshield.

The grade of the aerial is important to be able to receiving a continual signal. A poor quality aerial won't work well enough to receive a digital signal everywhere. When you've got a top quality aerial then you will be equipped to receive a digital signal from much more places throughout the country. Many people fork out big money for the head unit and not a lot for the aerial. Remember the head unit is just as good as the aerial attached to it!

Before you update your car radio system be sure to check Steve Peppers excellent DAB Car Radio reviews to find the best product for you.

Satellite radio has really taken off. It is extremely popular for two or three main reasons such as quality, content and availability. In the context of satellite radio, quality refers to the quality of sound that is capable of being reproduced by the equipment because of the signal; content refers to the types of programmes being broadcast by the various radio channels or stations and availability refers to the footprint or coverage of the satellite, that is how much area of land receives the signal from the satellite.

All these comparisons are made with terrestrial radio broadcasts obviously. For example, we all know that standard AM or FM stations differ hugely in quality, the content can be heavily interspersed with advertising, jingles and mindless chatter and coverage is usually only on a extremely local basis.

The two big players in the American satellite radio market are of course Sirius and XM and each one is attempting to out do the other in these three fields

Normally, satellite radio produces a quality of sound which is equivalent to CD quality. This is extremely high, particularly if you use decent quality equipment to replay the signal received. If you merely replay satellite radio through tinny, ancient, blown speakers, then you will hardly benefit from this boost in quality at all.

Quality, content and coverage have all played a part in increasing the popularity of satellite radio, but it is probably content which has played the biggest part.

You may be wondering why anyone would want to shell out for subscription radio, when there is so much free radio around. It is a fair point, but in fact, similarities can be drawn with cable TV and broadcast television. Why do people pay for that? Is it the sound quality? Or the content? Or what? A lot of cable TV is drivel too. Sports coverage, possibly.

At least the preponderance of satellite radio is free of advertising. That has to be worth a couple dollars a month and it is in fact a big selling point. Many people refer to the lack of advertising as one of their foremost reasons for switching to satellite radio.

It is likely that all big league sports games will move to subscription only over the next couple years. This will without doubt be carried out with the use of satellite radio. American football, soccer, baseball, basketball will all either get their own nationwide stations or be bundled with other stations

People are bored with with the amount of advertising on AM and FM radio, but at the end of the day, the main reason whether to get satellite radio or not for most people rests on content not even so much on the quality of the sound. If sport is removed from terrestrial radio and only available on satellite radio, then people, especially men, will switch to satellite radio, which is precisely what happened with cable and satellite television.

XM Radio is one of the two largest American satellite radio broadcasters. They broadcast over 150 programmes of all types like sports, traffic, weather, music of all decades and comedy.

The principal area of their broadcasting activities though is music. After all, that is what most people like to listen to whilst they are driving or working at home or in the yard.

The music of XM Radio is wide-ranging, catering to the requirements of every music ever recorded. For instance, of the sixty-eight music channels, there are channels that play music from only one decade: from the Forties to the Noughties!

Then, transversing those barriers of time, there are music channels that only play Rock and Roll or only play Bee Bop or only play the Blues. There are also channels that only play new releases.

There are others that only play film soundtracks. In fact, XM music radio has most bases covered. There are even channels that play the music that is being played live in nightclubs such as the 'B.B. King Club' in New York City! The 'Blue Note Club' is there too! In fact, the world of music is your oyster.

Then, on a different level, there are the leisure shows fronted by people like Snoop Dog and comedy shows with characters such as Opie and Anthony. There is family comedy as well and Playboy Radio for the older members of the family, although Playboy Radio pictures do not have to be rated.

Sports fans will enjoy the dedicated sports channels. XM Radio's sports channels report on such sports as American football, basketball and baseball on a regular basis, although there are international sports shown for the more out-going too: worldwide, International sports like soccer, the most popular participation sport in the world.

In fact, there are at present thirty-eight sports channels in XM's stable, although by the time you read this, there will probably be three or four times that number. Many service providers are flocking to Xm's service in order to achieve nationwide coverage in the United States.

News channels are there as well. Channels like the world-respected BBC World Service, CNBC, Fox, the controversial C-Span, CNN, the Discovery Channel, NASCAR Racing, E-Entertainment and many more.

If you require equipment to receive this interesting new technology, you can easily find it on the Internet or in your local shopping mall. The cost of the equipment will not break the bank, but it is best if you price it up and then wait a week or two because new 'special offers' are coming out all the time.

The best way to get XM Satellite Radio for today's best price is to wait and look which way the wind is blowing, in a short while you will get this illustrious satellite broadcaster for a knock-down price.

Welcome to part two of 'How To Get Free Radio Advertising'. In part one we looked at how to get in touch with the radio station manager and how to bring up the subject of acquiring free on-air radio advertising. If you have not yet read it, please look for 'How To Get Free Radio Advertising - part 1' on this site.

Doing it this way makes saying 'yes' or 'no' very easy for the manager, because his only decisions are whether he trusts you and whether he can fit you in or not. If the manager agrees to give your proposal his deliberation, put all your material in a package with a covering letter reiterating what you said on the phone, a photo of or a gratis copy of your product and your advertising copy.

Send it off or deliver it immediately. Include a stamped, self addressed envelope, if you want a written reply or your material returned.

If your application is rejected, send him a 'thank you, perhaps next time' note and move on to the next name. If you are rejected frequently, perhaps you ought to sweeten your offer a little by increasing their percentage of the cut or increasing the price of the product. You will have to do some research there as well, if you do not get it correct first time.

Doing business such as this is traditionally done using the phone and the postal service, because radio managers are usually hard-pressed for time. However, it would be feasible to do all this over the Internet, except sending samples, naturally, if the manager is comfortable using the Internet.

It always surprises me how many people there are out there in business who do not use the Internet very frequently because they do not understand much about it.

You could suggest using the Internet for sending your material over but do not be forceful about it, because the manager may be too embarrassed to declare that he cannot use the Internet. It could also be faxed over, but faxes frequently come out looking tatty and that may spoil your chances. If in doubt, just post it.

If you get a green light to your application, be ready to act quickly, so always have your stuff bundled up and ready to go. Never give them time to forget who you are or 'go off the boil'.

You will have to have written your commercials first, but how long should they be? This is a difficult one, so ask the manager in your initial discussion, whether they have an advertising policy or preference for the length of slots.

It could be thirty seconds a slot or sixty seconds (a double slot). As soon as you know, you can write your adverts: two different adverts for each length of slot.

If you want to be completely pre-prepared, you could write two fifteen second, two thirty second and two sixty second ads before you even ring anyone. And do not forget to read them back aloud several times to check them for length. Try procuring a few friends to read them back to you too.

The radio station will need you to sign a contract and you should have a simple contract drawn up too detailing your payment policy, returns policy, dispatch policy, et cetera, et cetera.

In summary, your P.I. Advertising Package should contain the following: 1. a cover letter 2. a sample or product literature 3. two thirty second and two sixty second adverts 4. your P.I. advertising contract 5. a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

In conclusion, I want to offer a couple of bits of advice. Whilst you are writing your adverts, try to incorporate a catchphrase of some sort so that you can use it in your off-air advertising to remind people that your product has been advertised on-air. Spend a lot of time writing your commercial: radio station managers are busy, professional people and they cannot afford to waste valuable air time on non-earners.

If your product sells and makes money for them, you will be welcome back, otherwise you will be ignored. Put a few ads in the paper and fliers through the doors to pre-warm people to your up-and-coming radio advertising campaign.

If you happen to're not tried and tested sort of music artist that may be a surefire hit, main labels will not spend tons of cash to put money into you. Creating music and placing it online for some govt find is not the best way to go about things. Most music artist assume that it is. As you perhaps already know, RFID is an acronym for 'Radio Frequency Identification' - it is the thing that makes ID tags work - but you probably only started hearing about it over the last couple of years. So, how much do you know about RFID? In this piece of writing, I want to take a short look at the history of this seemingly new invention, which has entered almost every facet of a city-dweller's life and that of many livestock farmers as well.

The start of it all was in 1915, say some, when the British come up with a system called IFF, which is short for 'Identification: Friend or Foe'. Whoever invented it, the first known installation of the IFF transponder was into the FuG German aircraft in 1940 in the course of the Second World War.

However, IFF does not identify enemy aircraft, it can only identify friendly aircraft. All others have to be treated with suspicion. The same type of technology is still in use in military and civilian aircraft today. The British managed to decode the FuG's signals and reply properly, giving them a false positive, which gave them the advantage in a dog fight.

At the end of the war and the beginning of the Cold War, Leon Theremin invented a device for the Soviet Union which retransmitted incident radio waves and other audio details. It is not true RFID, but it is accredited with being a forerunner of RFID, because it was a passive device which was activated by an outside source.

In 1948, Harry Stockman wrote a paper entitled: "Communication by Means of Reflected Power", in which he stated: "... considerable research and development work has to be done before the remaining basic problems in reflected-power communication are solved, and before the field of useful applications is explored".

This was true. The difficulties were essentially threefold: the devices needed a lot of power to work properly; they were too big for use in anything but large items like aircraft and they were very expensive. However, people could already imagine uses for the technology when these three problems had been surmounted.

(In 2009, researchers at Bristol University stuck RFID devices to live ants to track their movements).

The first modern predecessor of the RFID device was something that Mario Cardullo demonstrated to the New York Port Authority in 1971. It was a passive transponder which transmitted information employing power supplied by an external source. It's proposed use was to identify ships to the Port Authority for the intention of collecting toll fees.

Steven Depp, Alfred Koelle, and Robert Freyman demonstrated a set-up in 1974 which employed RFID tags. This has become the basis of the system which is now extensively used all around the world to collect toll fees on autobahns and in car parks.

Charles Walton was granted the first patent to include the acronym RFID in 1983.

The principal user of RFID tags is the US Department of Defense and after that the civil aviation industry, although the manufacturing industry is catching up fast with RFID tags being utilized to track goods from manufacture to point-of-sale.

Podcasting is, undeniably, becoming a major source of entertainment in today's world of busy commuters and hunched-over cubicle jockeys. Podcasts are a way to removed yourself from the harsh glare of the fluorescent bulbs overhead and enter a world that is tuned in to exactly what you want to talk about. Free Internet radio is taking off like a wildfire across every major city in the United States, Britain, Australia, and Canada. In just a couple more years, people will be talking about what Podcasting superstars like Ira Glass and Marc Maron have on their show instead of what happened on the television the previous night.

The freedom that free Internet radio grants both the listener and the producer is a tremendous leap beyond the strictly governed world of terrestrial radio. The FCC has no sway over what is said or done on a pod-cast, so there is no way for anyone to censor the content. This ensures that the pod-casters who are generating the content are not chained to a set of outdated laws that hamper free speech. Also, the fact that only the best pod-casts get listened to acts as a filter to screen out the chaff that tries to be offensive for no other purpose then to shock. It takes quality programming to balance the profane and the listenable.

There is one show on the rise that has garnered much attention from the free Internet radio listeners out there. This show is called Foul Mouth Radio, and it certainly lives up to its name. The show is run by a duo called Captain C.B. and his co-host, Cannon. They are joined by a lascivious lady they call Melons. At times misogynistic and crass, but also pertinent and sincere, the show walks a tightrope between offending and endearing. Many have described the show as being well done because it gives the comforting feeling of sitting around with some great friends and everyone saying whatever comes to mind. The conversation is natural, never forced, and real. Nothing like this could exist outside the Internet.

Foul Mouth Radio's parent company, Foul Mouth Shirts, began producing the show 4 years ago as a means of "advertainment". This was a means of entertaining people, while still bringing attention to the quality of their product. The show started fairly small, but quickly moved up to having its own Web site. People talked about how much they enjoyed the show to their friends, and then those people talked to their friends. People like sharing great things, and The Capt. C.B. and Cannon Show's spin on free Internet radio proved to be one of those rare, great things.

Foul Mouth Radio is not for everyone. It is a special thing made for a certain breed of rebel that spits in the face of common decency. People like this free Internet radio show because of that sense that anything may, and probably will, happen. While many people would be put off by the things these degenerates talk about, some are drawn to it. It is these people that Foul Mouth Radio feels a kinship to. People who deny the need for Political Correctness are Foul Mouth people to the core.

Radios have been around since the end of the 1800s, yet few of us really take the time out to think about how they work. The basic physics behind it involves radio waves which are sent out from a transmitter to your radio's antenna. These waves are invisible and work with both analogue and digital radios. When your favourite programme is recorded, this data is converted from audio into a radio wave and then sent out to be picked up by any antennas tuned into that frequency.

With regards to digital radios though, the signals required are a lot different to the analogue versions that we are used to. Rather than relying on changes in the amplitude or frequency of the radio wave used, these signals send out coded information that piggy backs on a carrier wave as it is sent out around the globe. This can contain data such as the audio signals of the song or talkback, as well as the name of the song or DJ and any other important information required.

The added data that is piggy backing on the electromagnetic wave then has to be reassembled within your radio. It is for this reason that digital radios lag slightly behind their analogue counterparts, as they have to process this extra information and then convert it into something that you can listen to. You can easily hear this lag by placing an analogue and a digital version next to each other and then tuning into the same radio station.

This slight lag is really not even a concern though, since digital radios are very beneficial to those who want good quality audio. The coded nature of the signals being broadcast ensures that interference and static are kept to an absolute minimum. This is because digital broadcasts simply piggy back radio waves and the information can thus be transported through any kind of setting even if the wave itself is changed or distorted. Thus, you should gain perfect reception no matter where you are.

Finally, the sound quality is drastically improved thanks to the larger amount of information that can be placed within a digital message. Whereas analogue versions had to omit some portions of data to fit into the broadcasted signals, digital radios can pick up a much crisper, clearer sound thanks to the added amount of information found in these coded signals. Thus, AM stations will sound like they are FM, while FM broadcasts will seem as though they are being played from a CD.
